Ever think about how the dimmer switch has changed our lives? Of course not. But it’s one of many things for which we can thank physicist/inventor/mensch Joel Spira. At the recent luncheon where he donated the Lutron archives to the Smithsonian, he remarked on how much his company had done to “save electricity–and romance.” Suddenly we heard, “I can vouch for that!” from the audience. It was his wife, Ruth, who did her own part in the early days by testing the dimmer and recording its reliability with meticulous hash marks in Joel’s notebook (a highlight of the collection imho).
